Upon the request of India, Facebook and Google removed "offensive content"

Facebook and Google said they executed a warrant issued by India to remove "objectionable material" on their sites. The companies are part of a list of 21 companies (including Yahoo and Microsoft also) accused of hosting material that can cause "social unrest".

The judges threatened to block sites with objectionable material, however, the companies argue that it is impossible to filter the material in advance up to the sites (because it is uploaded by users).

Last year, the Communications Minister Kapil Sibal, met with executives from Google, Facebook and other companies and said the government would launch a series of guides to ensure that material "blasphemous" does not appear on the Internet. Last month, the court asked the companies to "develop a system for maintaining reviewed and remove offensive material and their websites questionable" or "will block these sites as in China."

Sibal said that "my goal is that the material is uploaded never insulting," adding that "companies will have to give us information on where these images are being uploaded and who is doing it."

Google and Facebook said they met earlier orders to remove certain materials, according to their policies to respond to court orders. Trial is expected to convene the presence of corporate executives for the next month, although the companies appealed to have systems that allow users to report offensive material. Thus, it should be applied to any punishment.

Some cases of offensive material that have appeared in recent times were altered photo of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Also showed pictures of pigs running around Mecca.
Anyway, India's efforts certainly seem to currently making China where everything that happens online is highly controlled.
What do you think on Indian Governments decisions? Do comments!
